Robert E. Lee Specialty License Plate to Be Unveiled in Virginia

The Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold a press briefing on Friday, January 18, 2008, in the Briefing Room of the General Assembly Building adjacent to House Room C at 4pm in order to unveil to the public Virginia's newest automobile license plates honoring Robert E. Lee. The briefing is to be held on the official state holiday honoring General Lee and will be followed at 6pm by a ceremony honoring General Lee in the Old Hall of the House of Delegates of the State Capitol.

State Senator Frank M. Ruff of Clarksville was the patron of the license plate bill and will make a few fitting remarks at the briefing. State Senator Emmet W. Hanger , Jr. of Mount Solon, Chairman of the Virginia Robert E. Lee Commission will also speak.

The Lee license plate is the second Confederate oriented license plate issued by the Commonwealth. The Sons of Confederate Veterans also have an organizational plate bearing our Confederate Battle Flag logo which was issued following a lengthy legal battle which reached the 4th Circuit Federal appeals court and resulted in an SCV victory and an upholding of the First Amendment. Virginia SCV Commander Frank B. Earnest of Virginia Beach has stated that "because of massive public interest, the Lee plate will be the first of many Virginia license plates honoring Virginia's Confederates".

The Lee license plate will soon be available at DMV offices throughout Virginia and will be available to all citizens.
