Traditional Confederate and other period Civil War flags were in evidence in downtown Lexington on Friday as visitors swept into town to commemorate Lee-Jackson Day and to protest the city’s flag ordinance. Passers-by either honked their approval or offered less than welcoming greetings to the flaggers. An estimated 60 people came to hold the flags along Main Street and on street corners because the city will no longer allow flags other than the Virginia or United States flags to be flown from city flag standards.
